This issue looks at uniforms-clothing that signals service, duty, or membership-and the notion of uniformity. Our cultural landscape, from clothing and food, to music and architecture, is shaped by standardization. In this issue we consider the garments that signal rank and station, as well as responses-by artists, designers, photographers, and writers-to uniformity as a hallmark of industrialized societies.
